BACKGROUND:

This STS School is a rare opportunity to join a dynamic community of scholars for an immersive research and training program in the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS). The intensive School will be a meeting point of interdisciplinary dialogue, spanning 4 days of seminars, workshops, keynotes and fieldtrips and combining a mix of elements designed to support scholars’ research projects and professional careers. Participants will have the chance to: investigate timely critical debates and perspectives; contribute to a rich scholarly program; and sharpen research and publication skills. 

Seoul offers a diverse group of scholars from wide-ranging disciplines and geographies the chance to collaborate with the editorial team of the journal Science, Technology, & Human Values, as well as invited instructors from universities in Korea and elsewhere. Instructors are STS scholars with disciplinary backgrounds in Anthropology, Sociology, Geography, Design Studies, History, Policy Studies, and other disciplines and fields who will be available to discuss your current and emerging research projects.

Keywords for the 2026 STS School include, but are not limited to: Anthropocene; biotechnology and health; carbon and climate; digital transformation and platforms; digital media; energy and infrastructure; epistemic cultures and knowledges; labour and capital; multispecies; resources and extractivism; science and innovation policy; technopolitics and technoscience; urban space and place.

HOW TO APPLY:

Applications should include:

  • An abstract (300 words max) of writing project related to your current primary research project, and which you plan to develop through participation at the STS School

  • A Curriculum Vitae (1 page max)

  • A biographical statement (200 words max) about your educational background and achievements

  • A support statement (300 words max) regarding the institutional resources available to you to support your attendance and whether further financial support will be required to enable attendance  

Successful applicants will be expected to submit 4,000-5,000 word drafts of an essay that they plan to develop at the STS School. This draft essay must be written in English and will be due for submission prior to the workshop by 10 May 2026. All participants will be assigned a mentor from the group of Instructors and will also be expected to discuss their draft during workshops. Please note that all instruction and sessions will be conducted in English.

While there are no specific eligibility criteria for applicants to the STS School, preference will be given to late-stage postgraduate students (i.e., writing up dissertation) and early career researchers (i.e., up to 5 years after PhD conferral). Preference will also be given to scholars based in the Asia-Pacific and scholars whose research focuses on this region.

COSTS:

There is no registration fee for successful applicants to the STS School. Financial support for travel to Seoul and accommodation during the school for non-local participants will be available, but it is limited and will be allocated based on need. Participants will be encouraged to find support from their home institutions so that priority can be given to participants with limited resources.
